How to Receive Our Lord

When the priest comes before you, he will say, “The Body of Christ.” You may quietly say “Amen.” Then look up, open your mouth, and extend your tongue. The priest will place the Body on your tongue. Do not chew; let it dissolve in your mouth. As the priest moves to the next person in line, make the sign of the cross.

Hold your hands out in front of you, right hand over your left. The priest will place the Body of Christ in your hand. Bring your hand up to your mouth to consume the Body. Do not chew; let it dissolve in your mouth.

Do not pick up the Body with your fingers, as you can drop the Body of Christ on the floor. If you do, as the deacon approaches with the chalice, direct his attention to the Body. This is not the preferred way, as accidents can and do happen.

Receive the Body of Christ in the hand, and continue to hold your hands out. The deacon will take the Body from your hand, dip it into the Chalice, and place it on your tongue. Do not chew; let it dissolve in your mouth.

You cannot and will not be allowed to dip the Body into the Chalice yourself. The chances of spilling are too great.

As the deacon extends the chalice to you, he will say, “The Blood of Christ.” Gently hold the base of the chalice in your dominant hand and help guide the chalice to your mouth. Take a sip of the Blood. Please refrain from taking a large drink — it is not a refreshment, but a sacrament.

If you have not been baptized, you should not receive the Eucharist, but you may still come forward. Kneel at the altar rail, cross your arms over your chest, and bow your head. The priest will put his hands upon your head and recite a blessing over you.
